The Japanese Language Kit is a combination of system and language resources that enables you to create, display, and edit documents in Japanese on the Macintosh™ and other computers using the Mac™ OS.
The floppy disk set and the CD-ROM both contain the software needed to install the Japanese Language Kit. The CD-ROM includes demo applications you can use with your Japanese Language Kit. (The samples are not full-scale programs, but they give you an overview of each product's features and functionality.) Also, look at the CD-ROM for updates to software you may already own.
Enhancements in this version of the Japanese Language Kit include System 7.5 and QuickDraw™ GX compatibility, a TrueType™ version of the Osaka font, an updated input method, and system resources to allow WorldScript™ to run native on Power Macintosh computers.
Current Japanese Language Kit version 1.0 and 1.1 Users
During installation, the Installer safeguards your system folder against data loss by creating temporary files. These temporary files and your Japanese Language Kit may require up to 41 MB of hard drive space for correct installation. After installation the Japanese Language Kit will occupy less than 30 MB. (Size will vary depending on which fonts you choose to install.)
If you do not have sufficient space for installation, you can make more space available by doing the following:
1. Remove unnecessary files or applications.
2. Custom remove the current language kit.
To custom remove the current language kit:
1. Insert Disk 1 of Japanese Language Kit v 1.1 or 1.0 in the floppy disk drive.
2. Double click on the Installer icon and immediately hold down the Option key. (Hold down the Option key until you see the Remove button in the right hand corner of the dialog box.)
3. Shift select all items displayed, then press the Remove button. (NOTE: If the button says Install, press the Option key again change it back to Remove.)
Installation
Refer to the Macintosh Japanese Language Kit Installation and User's Guide for installation and set up information.
If you have a Performa or PowerBook and receive a dialog box during installation that refers you to this READ ME, you must remove the "Launcher Control Panel" before installation.
To remove the Launcher, do the following:
1. Open the System Folder.
2. Open the Control Panels folder.
3. Select the Launcher and drag it to another folder.
4. Install the Japanese Language Kit.
5. Place the Launcher back into the Control Panels folder (inside the System Folder).
Prior to installing the Japanese Language Kit on the Arabic or Hebrew versions of the Mac OS, you may want to choose the left-to-right setting in the Text Control Panel for proper justification of Roman text during installation.
Printing
If you experience printing problems with the LaserWriter 8 printer driver,
use the LaserWriter v. 7.2 printer driver.
To select the LaserWriter v. 7.2 printer driver do the following:
1. Open the Apple Menu and select the Chooser.
2. Click the LaserWriter icon.
Note: LaserWriter v. 7.2 is the version of LaserWriter that comes with System 7.5.
Helpful Hints
The Macintosh Japanese Input Method Guide (chapter 5) will show you how to create your own user dictionary to save frequently used Kanji characters and names.
To activate the Japanese input method open a Japanese Language Kit compatible application or a Japanese application.
Compatible Applications
The Japanese Language Kit includes a basic text processing application called SimpleText Japanese. Previous versions of the Japanese Language Kit included TeachText Japanese. All TeachText Japanese documents can be edited with SimpleText Japanese.
The Japanese Language Kit can be used with a variety of Japanese-localized applications. Most of these applications are available for purchase through specialized distributors and dealers outside of Japan. They include:
